People.

It is such a shame that what information there is, for the most part is tied to the drug companies. They tell you the symptoms and just enough about the condition or disease as the case may be to send you running to the doctor who you should be able to trust but can't always because he is overworked and the quickest fix is a pill. In the states where you have to pay for every thing, the internet seems the cheapest way to go and in the case of legitimate sites like this one it is. But here in Canada there is little information pointing to therapists and when there is we still don't understand what they do. I had no Idea. I thought they were just people you told your troubles to. I had no idea what knowledge and resources they had. The amount of lost time and wages is staggering. And if it could be caught early it would reduce the amount of heartache.  Lost time can not be replaced. What would it take? A little advertisement? Ok that costs money so it won't happen. We can do are part by word of mouth, and by posting our cases where others can see them. Not just the successes but our stories. We need to give them something to relate to in the forums and in the blogs.

I didn't know the numbers were that high. If the numbers are that high in Canada I can't even imagine how high the numbers are here in the U.S. with the state that this country is in right now.  I have noticed from reading posts here on this site that Canada is much more aware of the problem and is much supportive and more willing to get people the help the need. I hope that some day we can get the support and help we that we need here in the U.S.   Over here they seem to hand out pills like candy but do not suggest or give people the one on one therapy/counseling that the need to deal with these illnesses.  I had never hear of CBT before coming on to this site.  I spent many years going up to the V.A. medical center with my late husband and CBT was never offered or mentioned as a treatment  in the military sector or the civilian population for that matter. I think that this treatment could of helped him and many others in the civilian sector. I think that lives could be saved with the right treatment.  I agree with Sunny that their needs to be more information out their for people world wide.  Of course your have to live in a country where they are willing to admit that these illness exist and second they having to be willing to give people the tools they need to get well.   This is my take on this subject.

Sunny

My therapist gave me even higher numbers, but she was including all forms of anxiety disorder also and including herself also because she has been depressed at times even with all her skills. I think more needs to be done to reduce stress in not only the work place but all our living space. This centralizing with the emphasis on fewer but bigger schools, hospitals, offices and cities is not helping. We need to slow down with more emphasis on relaxation not this rush rush. If we spent as much time and money on and in parks instead of electronic and other toys we would be a lot calmer. I some times long for the pre industrial age, but please without the crowding and disease. I guess I am just a country boy and will never get used to city life.

I didn't realize it was that high percentage - more info. out there would be most helpful.  I believe there is still stigma attached to this and need to open up the subject and increase PR re: all types of mental illness.  I have seen an increase in information and I think we need to keep it up.

Myth: Mental illness is a rare disorder.

Fact: One in five Canadians have a mental health problem at some point in their lives.
